Consolidate Democracy

Consolidate Democracy

En Avant unequivocally opts for parliamentary and representative democracy, believing that this system is the only one that can claim permanent legitimacy. Beyond the defects inherent in the rules of the democratic game, defects which, under certain conditions, increase to the point of threatening this regime, it remains obvious that the democratic system remains the least bad among those in force in the world. To fully bring our democracy to life and prevent abuses, we will have to remain vigilant, especially since political patronage and corruption remain two very widespread social and political phenomena in current democracies, particularly in Haiti. Their very existence undermines the theoretical principles of democracy and gradually destroys democratic values and behaviors, which leads to the disaffection of a large part of the population.

Equality, fraternity, freedom of opinion and expression: this is what establishes democracy as a higher principle of social organization. Freedom of the press and the independence of the judiciary are its guarantors. In the institutional domain, we want an effective separation between legislative and executive power. We refuse to believe that the destiny of our country is linked to the emergence of a providential messiah. Our project is part of a democratic logic. Some recent developments are disturbing, notably the violent dispersal of peaceful demonstrations and the executive’s attacks on the judiciary. Our fight will always be to preserve democracy and human rights.
